Is Ukraine Ready?

First impression - Kyiv is not ready for Euro Cup 2012. In the main tourist areas, the default language in the local businesses is usually Russian. Locals oddly stare at obvious tourists that have started arriving for Euro Cup. English language in public places is sparse, and outside the main strip, essentially non-existent. The most important exception to this, though, is the Metro system. Maps and station names are shown in English and Ukrainian, and caution messages are projected in both languages.

The most troubling element to all of this is the attitude of the city residents. They seem to be unaware that in the next several weeks, 300,000 some-odd non-Ukrainian speakers will descend upon the city. In the train stations and in many shops, American currency (or any currency besides the hryvnia) is not accepted outright. Many are not able or are reluctant to communicate in English, and some, in anything but Russian. As a Canadian citizen, the impression is that they feel it is the tourist's responsibility to know the nuances of the Ukrainian way of life, and if you don't, you are an intolerable inconvenience. Hopefully a second impression will be different....

Pictures to follow shortly!

Welcome to our Travel Blog!

Friends and supporters,

For the entire month of June, we - two of LUC’s most intrepid members - Andrijko Semaniuk and Zenon Ciz, will be braving our beloved motherland amidst the turbulent circumstances surrounding EURO 2012
International boycotts, economic manipulation, and political indiscretion culminate the years-long preparations for this prestigious tournament.  At the same time, with hundreds of thousands of tourists descending on Ukraine’s capital in the coming weeks, this stage is set for an interesting – if not calamitous – moment in Ukraine’s quest for international recognition.

After the UEFA EURO Tournament comes to its crescendo on July 1st in Kyiv, our travels will continue! We'll embark on a two-month, cross-European journey, experiencing local culture in many of the the major European countries. What will we do for six weeks, you ask? After spending some time in Lviv and western Україна, we'll parkour our way around Paris, drink some beer in Germany, and yes - even hit a CУМ Tabir along the way. (It just wouldn't be summer without a tabir, would it?) Follow all of our exploits right here as well!

Please enjoy our posts, leave some comments, and wish us well on our adventures!

PS It wouldn't be a bad idea for someone to start a fund for bail money...just in case.
